World's First Collaborative SCARA Robot

Collaborative robots are mechanisms that can be safely used next to people without the need for safety barriers, which are expensive, consume a great deal of bench/floor space, and obstruct access to equipment.  The PF400 is the world's first collaborative SCARA robot. All of the contact forces generated by this mechanism are limited so that the robot cannot hurt a user even if it collides with them at full speed, making it safe to operate side-by-side with personnel.  In fact, after careful evaluation by our customers, hundreds of PF400’s are in daily use in applications without safety barriers.

All Precise collaborative robots have been measured and certified by TUV to exert forces that fall within the force guidelines for collaborative robots as defined by the recent ISO/TS 15066 Standard on Collaborative Robots. Even maximum speed collisions in free space are well under the ISO force limits for operator safety. However, in order to use a robot in an application without safety shields, the application as a whole (including end effectors, operation methods, objects being handled and obstacles in the workcell) must be evaluated for safety. For more information on the evaluation of applications and workcells without safety shields, please contact Precise Automation.

This low-cost, quiet OEM mechanism has its motion controller, harnesses and power supplies embedded within its structure to eliminate extra enclosures and simplify installation.  This space saving design, together with a novel geometry, allows the PF400 to service many stations in an extremely small workcell.  Combined with absolute encoder servo motors, which do not require any motion to home during start-up, and the collaborative aspects of the robot, which eliminate the need for barriers, the PF400 significantly reduces the size and cost an automated cell.  The lightweight PF400 can be carried by one person, mounted on a table and, by plugging in just an AC power cord and an Ethernet cable, is ready to operate.

Powerful Motion Control

All Precise Automation mechanisms feature the powerful embedded Guidance Vision-Guided Motion Controller.  This controller includes a number of specialized algorithms that contribute to the collaborative characteristics of the robot.  In addition, the Guidance controller offers gravity balanced free mode teaching aids and excellent capabilities for automatically generating elegant and reliable motion sequences.  Its features permit the mechanism’s gripper to move along smooth, straight line paths or arbitrarily complex motion sequences by simply moving the robot by hand to start and end positions and letting the controller handle the rest.  Some of the controller’s other outstanding features include: a simple, yet powerful programming language; Ethernet interface (featuring PC control via an open source TCP/IP Command Server); kinematics for Cartesian motions; and an embedded web server that permits the robot to be operated locally via a standard browser executed on a PC or a wireless tablet or remotely from anywhere in the world.
